Smart Bathrooms – What’s Available?

Smart technology is steadily making its way into every room of the home – and yes, that includes the bathroom! While it might seem like an odd place to bring in gadgets and gizmos, the latest innovations are proving that smart bathrooms aren’t just a passing bathroom trend. They’re about convenience, comfort, and clever design, but only when done right.

So, what’s worth investing in, and what’s likely to gather dust (or steam)?

Popular smart bathroom features

Your bathroom plays a big role in your day. From groggy morning routines to winding down at night. Here are some popular tech upgrades that can genuinely improve your experience:

Bluetooth mirrors with built-in speakers

Listening to music, the news, or a podcast while getting ready? Bluetooth mirrors make it easy, with integrated speakers that free up counter space and reduce clutter.

That said, they’re not for everyone.

One of our customers recently installed a high-end smart mirror with speakers, only to find they preferred their trusty portable Bluetooth speaker. It was simpler, easier to replace, and more flexible. High-tech doesn’t always mean high use, so have a think about your preferences and what will actually compliment your lifestyle.

Illuminated cabinets with motion sensors and USB ports

Modern bathroom cabinets now do more than just store toiletries. With built-in motion sensors, the lighting can activate automatically during night-time visits, making it much softer than flipping on the main light and disturbing your sleep. USB ports and shaver sockets tucked inside help keep counters tidy, while demisting technology ensures the mirror stays clear after a hot shower.

Some versions even have gesture-controlled lights which are super handy when your hands are wet or full. It’s these subtle features that can really improve everyday use without getting in the way.

Digital shower controls

Forget fiddling with taps to get the temperature just right. Digital shower systems let you dial in your perfect setting, and many even let you save preferences for different users. Some can be started remotely via smartphone which is perfect if you want the water ready before you even step in It’s one of those upgrades that, once you have it, you often wonder how you ever managed without it!

Heated floors and towel racks

Unsurprisingly, underfloor heating is one of the most appreciated smart comforts. On cold mornings, stepping onto warm tiles makes a huge difference, and its surprisingly energy-efficient when paired with a good thermostat.

Add a heated towel rail and you’ve got a bathroom that feels more like a spa. These features go beyond just luxury; they also help reduce moisture and improve overall comfort.

Is AI making its way into bathrooms?

Not quite, at least, not in the way it’s dominating kitchens and living rooms. You won’t find ChatGPT running your bath just yet, however, elements of smart home assistants are starting to creep in. Voice-controlled lighting, reminders to replace your toothbrush, or even syncing your bathroom lighting with your morning alarm – it’s all possible, but still in its early days for most homes.

We expect AI to become more involved in energy usage, water conservation, and even accessibility in the future, but for now, its presence is much more subtle.

Gimmick or game-changer?

The line between useful and unnecessary can be thin, and it often depends on your lifestyle.

Touchless taps

These are great for hygiene and perfect for family bathrooms.

Bathroom TVs

TVs in the bathroom aren’t as common anymore. Thanks to tablets and waterproof cases, they’ve become much less practical.

Kinetic (wireless) light switches

These battery-free switches generate their own energy, meaning you can place them anywhere, even in tricky spots where traditional wiring is a pain. They’re a real win for older homeowners or those renovating without tearing into walls.

Our advice is always to be practical. A feature might sound exciting, but will you use it every day? If not, maybe skip it.

Should I bring smart devices into my bathroom?

If you’re thinking about smartening up your bathroom, here are some golden rules to keep in mind:

Focus on function

The best smart tech enhances what you already do in the bathroom. It shouldn’t make it more complicated or give you a tech headache!

Keep it energy-efficient

Digital thermostats, LED motion lighting, and timed heating systems aren’t just clever, they can also save you money in the long-term.

Think long-term

Speaking of long-term, one of the best bathroom tech is portable and doesn’t need to be wired in. That makes it easier to upgrade without committing to permanent fixtures that may date quickly.

Don’t overcrowd the space

Bathrooms are, above all, practical. The tech you choose should support that, not take away from it.
